What is Sound Assisted Therapy?

Sound Assisted Therapy is the intentional use of sound in the therapy process to help bring deeper resolution and healing to the mind and body.

Our world is filled with sound. Imagine the last time you heard a loud, unpleasant and unexpected noise. Your body may have jumped involuntarily, you may have experienced irritation and been left with an unsettled sensation and an increased heart rate. This is the activation of your sympathetic nervous system. In contrast, take a moment to recall your favourite sound, waves at the beach, your favourite song, a loved one’s voice. These sounds often induce a sense of calm or peace within you, and your body likely responds with a slow and steady heart rate and breath cycle. This is the activation of your parasympathetic nervous systemSound is powerful!

Sound has direct physiological impacts on the body and our emotional and mental states. Therefore, we can use it with intention to support the mind and body toward optimal wellbeing.

The therapeutic use of sound can help integrate the cognitive learning that often occurs in therapy deeper into the body. This integration helps to bridge the gap between knowing and feeling. This can increase a felt sense of restored safety and balance in your system.
